Since 1955 the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair (GSDSEF) has been more than a competition—it strengthens STEM literacy and the critical thinking skills gained through experience…and is a launching pad for the next generation of scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, and innovators.
Kayley Xu
“Participating in GSDSEF has been an extremely formative and inspiring part of my STEM journey! Since presenting my first project in 6th grade, a somewhat overengineered solution of melted ice ruining my lemonade, GSDSEF has encouraged me year after year to follow my curiosity further, ask ambitious questions, and persist through the uncertainty and iterative nature of research. Most of all, I value the community that GSDSEF fosters, where passionate San Diego students, mentors, judges, and organizers all share an excitement for discovery and innovation!”
Earl Williams

In 1983, Earl’s 10th grade project won the Senior Division Second Alternate Sweepstakes Award and the Kiwanis Award, which earned him a two-week exchange program trip as a guest exhibitor at the New Zealand Science Fair in Christchurch, NZ. As an 8th grader, he won the Junior Division Sweepstakes Award at both the GSDSEF and the California Science Fair in 1981.

For the past 20 years, Earl has enjoyed being a Behavioral Sciences Category Judge and a Life Sciences Grand Awards Judge. Forty-two years after being a Junior Division Student Exhibitor, Earl also serves as the GSDSEF President of the Board of Directors and a Management Committee Member.

Every year, hundreds of 6th through 12th grade students in San Diego and Imperial Counties invest countless hours exploring challenging questions, conducting original research, and developing solutions with the potential to impact our world.
Your support helps make student research possible by funding GSDSEF programs, expert judging, awards, and the resources needed to produce a transformational, high-quality educational experience.
Shounak Ray Chaudhuri
“I wish I had heard about the GSDSEF sooner. I began competing in 10th grade (GSDSEF 2024), and I was pleasantly surprised how constructive the sessions with my judges were. The GSDSEF, its resources for prospective competitors, and the other fairs it led me to, gave me the platform to build my passion for autonomous vehicles. I'm confident that the GSDSEF helped me get into Caltech, where I'm studying Mechanical Engineering and Robotics.”

With your tax-deductible contribution to the GSDSEF, you are not only recognizing student achievement today—you are helping cultivate STEM literacy, fostering curiosity, creativity, and STEM leadership that will drive tomorrow’s scientific breakthroughs.
